changnoi chews the cud with Dean Barett about his dens of inequitity that have inspired many of his novels, including his latest
detective Skytrain to Murder which is set over the Boots and Saddle
bar which is based on the Texas Lone Star Saloon.
We parked our horse outside and entered this favorite haunt of oil riggers, Vietnam vets, and the living literary icons of Bangers- there are posters of Moore and Barrett books competing with each other and down loaded porn that grace the bars walls with racy puns. Dean's kicking back over a Sing and is nursing one of the Yings at the bar, who occassionally interupts the inteview with, "You buy me another drink Dean."
"What's your favorite watering hole?"
Dean: This is one, Texas Lonestar, Washington Square. George, the
80-year-old owner sits here under the stuffed bull. He leaves here
about midday, so you don't see him much. But there are a lot of
regulars. It's actually a day time bar more than a night time bar.
You see its empty (it's only 10pm on a Sat night on Sukkunvit). It's a
morning bar.
Now Wild Country next door has some of the wildest women. The
one's you don't care for going for, right? And Silver Dollar (a few
bars down form Lonestar), and then you get Bourbon Street that
serves Cajun food. Then I go down to Tafes bar.
But I like to hang out here. When I first came to Bangkok years ago,
I lived above this bar. But I had all my books with me which took up
room. So I eventually moved to Soi 31, a ten minute walk
from here. Which puts me very close to Soi Cowboy of course, just around the
corner from Soi 31 and Soi 33 where the art bars are. It's a nice position. But it's hard to get any work done. I know at any direction out there, within five minutes there are beautiful available women. That's very tough.
When I was in Manhattan for 14 years I could come back after
dinner and write until 11 o'clock. But that's very tough to do that here. When you come back after dinner you stop off at the Londoner Pub or wherever for a beer, and one beer leads to three. So you don't do as much writing here. But it's more fun, you know. That's the trade off.
