Growing consumer concern for the environment has led to the development of a range of 'greener' beverages. A scan of Productscan this month highlights this trend, with the recent launch of a 'green' vodka which has environmentally friendly credentials, and a bottled water packaged in lightweight plastic.
'Content 360 Vodka is a newly launched vodka from McCormick Distilling Company, which is described as being a "green" vodka brand. The vodka, recently introduced to the US market, is promoted as having numerous "green" credentials, such as utilizing an energy-efficient, "five times filtered" distillation process, and being packaged in an 85% recycled glass bottle with a chlorine-free paper label. It also encourages the return of its bottle stops by donating $1 for each one returned to charity. The concept of a "green" spirit brand would appear to be brand new, and could go down well with the ethically minded.
Also launching a new vodka is Smirnoff, which has recently introduced a mojito-flavored vodka in the US. Mojito cocktails are traditionally made with rum, but Smirnoff has exploited this flavor's growing popularity with the Smirnoff Vodka Mojito, which is green in color and has a mint flavor, like the traditional cocktail. The mojito flavor has emerged in a variety of products in recent months; its appearance in a Smirnoff drink shows that the big brands are now coming up with their own derivations of this flavor.
In Germany, Neumarkter Lammsbräu has launched a new type of beer which is unusual in that it is made with organic spelt wheat. The Neumarkter Lammsbräu Öko-Dinkel-Bier is said to be made with the purest variety of spelt, while also being rich in vitamins and minerals - another curious claim for a beer to make. While its content may be unusual, it highlights that the beer maker is attempting to tap into the healthy premium trend.
In Russia the Bio J Anti-Hangover Drink "Tan-Airan" has been released by Lyuberetsky Molochnyi Zavod. Promoted as a hangover cure, this sour milk-based drink comes in three varieties: plain, dill and pickle. The makers claim they are beneficial for consumers who have consumed too much alcohol.
